Experience of Wives Caregiving Husbands with Terminal Cancer at Home: Phenomenological Study
Yeom Young-Sun
Abstract
Purpose: This was an integrated and in-depth study conducted to understand the experience of wives caring for terminally ill husbands at home.

Methods: This was a qualitative study that applied Colaizzi's phenomenological research method to understand the experiences of wives caring for terminally ill husbands at home. For data collection, individual in-depth interviews were conducted from November 2017 to July 2018 with six wives caring for husbands with terminal cancer at home.

Results: The data analysis found 31 semantic units, and they were grouped to form eight themes and three theme clusters (Table 2). The collection of themes derived from the results of this study was ¡°the swamp of pain that I am gradually falling into¡±, ¡°surviving with my husband in a house like my body¡±, and ¡°embracing and moving forward¡±.

Conclusion: The wives took care of their late-stage cancer husbands alone at home and continued to take care of them silently even if they suffered ill effects. The home was an appropriate space for the wives to take care of their husbands, and they accepted their situations as their destiny and fulfilled their responsibilities.
